Devyn Kim places 4th in Olympic Weightlifting

“Murrieta Mesa’s own, Devyn Kim (Mesa Junior), shines and places 4th in the world at the 2019 Youth World Championships for Olympic Weightlifting held on March 12, 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Devyn was the only athlete chosen to represent Team USA in the 64kg female (>141lbs) weight category. She is already a proven elite athlete that consistently ranks among the best in the world every year at the CrossFit Games competitions (a worldwide competition that challenges all different aspects of physical fitness), the Youth World Championship hosted over 200 athletes and teams from over 30 countries around the globe; with such countries represented from Japan, China, Egypt, Soviet Union, Greece, Syria, Australia, Germany, Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil, Uzbekistan and many others. In only her fifth weightlifting event ever, she went 5-for-6 for successful lifts; including a perfect 3-for-3 in the snatch.

Her lifts were: Snatch (69kg, 72kg, 76kg (152lbs, 159lbs, 168lbs)), Clean & Jerk (93kg, 97kg, 101kg (205lbs, 214lbs, 223lbs))

“It was an honor to represent my country and to be a part of Team USA. I really enjoyed meeting the other athletes from my team and different countries. I hope to continue these friendships for years to come. I was pretty nervous at first. By the time I got the call to be on the team, I did not have much time to prepare or train for this event. So I was a little unsure of how I would do and what to expect. However, once I was there I was able to settle in and just lift. Although, these are not my best snatch numbers, I was still happy to go 3-for-3.

This is definitely a type of sport that I hope to share with others interested in it. All shapes, sizes and weights can do it. In the end, you really are just competing against yourself and trying to do the very best that YOU can do.”

If anyone is interested on how to begin weightlifting, feel free to ask her. She is always eager to help. Congratulations Devyn on such a remarkable achievement!””
